Properly Chilled: Downtempo Music and Culture
-
Properly Chilled opened its doors in January of 2005. It did not hit the Momo radar until some point in 2008. A little slow on the uptake was I (He said in a Yoda-like voice).
In my younger days, I felt compelled to listen to music that fit my “culture” subconsciously. For example, the Who’s Quadrophenia was a coming of age tale that pitted “Mods” against “Rockers” as a backdrop. I could relate to both…after all they were in the UK. In high school here in the states, there were freaks, jocks, geeks, etc. Each had a way to dress, behave and interact. The music that each listened to also fit the style. You really had to choose. OK, I was a bit of a freak and a jock. Today’s kids are no different.
I am no longer a kid. I am free to enjoy music without having to burden my musical choices with an identity question. Is this who you are Momo?
Downtempo music and culture are on display on the site known as Properly Chilled. I was drawn to the site based on a number of bands / DJs that are featured and discussed like Thievery Corporation and Tosca. I use the site to explore new music, see what shows might be coming into town and listen to an occasional podcast. I have to admit that the lingo used is a bit foreign. I am learning.
Properly Chilled even hosts their own events:
This event goes off on Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 10:00 PM (22:00). It’s being held at MARE Lounge, located at 17 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY.
Once again Properly Chilled takes over the perfectly stylish vibe of the MARE street level lounge and dance floor. If you missed our debut in April, all who did are feeling nothing but love for the night. You won’t want to miss this one!
Musically we covered everything, from classic downtempo to warbling dubstep, funky breaks and heavy Latin beats to slender deep house, but that’s not even half of it. And we’re doing it again!
We’ve got more incredible labels showing giveaway support; stay tuned.
The event looks to offer an array of styles and an opportunity to explore them in an environment of like-minded people. Eh, a culutre. Perhaps I will make the trip. So much for my cultural discussion above. If you like it, join it. Consider me Properly Chilled. What will I wear?

Meh - I still say that your music is part of your identity; I think you just define your identity more loosely since you don’t have to worry about dating cheerleaders & which acne medication to use.
I’d have to say my music tracks pretty closely to my identity.
