High Fidelity: Can record shops be saved?

Can record shops be saved? Should they be?

The mom and pop record / CD shops like the one in High Fidelity have been disappearing faster than restaurants of the same ilk for decades. Corporate Food, Radio, music distribution…yummy!

base_image1I remember “stealing” the family Chevy Bel Air pre-drivers license to get the Pink Floyd album Animals over at Looney Tunes in Summit, NJ. Days gone by.

    Here is what I miss…
The quick witted self-important opinion laced banter of record store employees.

    • The ability to explore new music.
    • The tactile bliss of the 12″ disc, liner notes and smell of a new record.
    • What is this we are listening to? Do you have one in stock?
    • A place to go on a rainy day to lift the spirits on an otherwise dreary day spending money you know you should not…hey, it was set aside for a rainy day.

Donald Bell explores the question of record store demise in a cnet review recently.  His article is part one.
