Muxtape: A work in progress
-
Momo has found a site full of new music…like no other…the future looks bright for Muxtape! Hang with me here…First, some history:
John Ouellette is the founder and CEO of Muxtape. The site was created originally in March of 2008.
The concept is one of a mixtape which introduces the listener to new music rather than a mix of songs already known. This original version allowed users to create online playlists from uploaded songs (users supply them) or from songs in the Muxtape library. This version was short-lived. Wikipedia tells it like this:
Past legal issues involving music sharing sites and programs led many observers to predict that Muxtape would eventually run into legal troubles with the music industry. However, Ouellette stated that Muxtape is different from the likes of Napster: “Its intended purpose is to introduce you to new music that you would then hopefully go and buy.” He reported that he has spoken with many record labels who are excited about Muxtape’s ability to bring new music to consumers. Some individuals predicted that if muxtape were to gain significant momentum it would be unlikely to be shut down by legal pressure; it was more likely to have changes forced upon it as it became a legal licensor of the music on the site.
On August 18th, 2008, Muxtape services ceased to be available, and the main page displayed the following message: “Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA….The site reappeared in preview mode on January 27, 2009; a blurb on the front page stated that “We’ve invited 12 of our favorite artists to help test, and in the coming weeks we’ll begin allowing bands to sign up themselves for free.”
Good news! The site is up and running…it’s still a work in progress.
From the Muxtape site:
It works, but it’s not done yet. When it is,
- bands will be able to sell downloads (and other things)
- anyone will be able to make mixes of music on the site
- labels will be able to manage their bands in one place
- developers will be able to build on our API
For now, bands can only be invited into the system by other bands.
The site is full of new music that I have taken an absolute shine to. Bands like Cryptacize (dark and sad), Spesus Christ (also dark), Adron (dreamy yet catchy), of Montreal (dance) and Dan Deacon (electronica) are there for the listening and mixing. BTW - these are my descriptions of the band styles based on a listening of one or two songs - hardly a comprehensive view.
I could not help but mention Cexman - You filthi beast!
Muxtape has a very simple design. Chances are it will remain this way…simple I mean…in the way the Justin presented the original.
