Are you looking for a socially conscious, irreverent, environmentally friendly entertainment company? Why would you be? Hang with me here a minute. I was introduced to Rhino Records back in the late 1980s by a friend who owned a CD store. Rhino was known primarily for their releases of reissues of previously released recordings licensed from other companies.

Among the audiophile mob they were known for for superior sound quality (remastering of the original tapes). Creative re-packaging made Rhino one of the most respected reissue record labels, receiving rave reviews from music collectors, fans, and historians. Remember, at this point in time, it was easy to find CDs of suspect quality that were being thrown out into the marketplace as quickly as they could be pressed. Rhino was quick to get into the Compact Disc market, releasing dozens of oldies CDs at the dawn of the CD age in 1984.

I was sold. Any time a Rhino release came out with an album or compilation of an artist I loved…I had to consider picking it up. Rent money or music money….Agghh!!!

Fast forward…In 1998 Rhino became a part of the Warner Music Group. By 2003, co-founders and longtime executives Richard Foos and Harold Bronson left Rhino, reportedly due to frustration at being unable to release compilation albums in an increasingly-competitive market. Soon after, Foos inaugurated a new label, Shout Factory, which began releasing dozens of CDs and videos mirroring the original early-1990s Rhino philosophy.

When you get the suits involved…
