Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3
-
Robyn Hitchcock has been described as eccentric and quirky (perhaps it’s the Brit in him). His varied body of work is a testament to being true to his heart…not the almighty GBP. Reinvention, after all, is standard operating procedure for Mr. Hitchcock. Certainly he is one of England’s most enduring singer/songwriters and live performers. Despite the cult status of his work, fringe fans such as myself have a love for his vast catalog. Robyn recently re-teamed with members of Venus 3 for a second album “Goodnight Oslo” released in February 2009. Venus 3 is an odd combination of Peter Buck (REM), Scott McCaughey (The Young Fresh Fellows & The Minus 5) & Bill Rieflin (Ministry). Buck works primarily rhythm guitar with a dual lead guitar role on I’m Falling (take me away). This song is a Momo favorite on this release. The Beatles (Lennon specifically), Byrds and Bob Dylan influences are apparent throughout. “Saturday Groovers” bring about a Beatles flavor, “Hurry for the Sky” and “Sixteen Years” recall Dylan-like qualities and Buck’s guitar work reminds me of the Byrds at their best.
Hitchcock admitted in a recent interview that his compass always points back to John Lennon. Nonetheless, Robyn is an Alernative Rock father figure.
“Ole Tarantula” was the first effort by this disparate set of talents and backgrounds. Another album well recommended. They are both on YepRoc Records. You can listen “Goodnight Oslo” on the site. Do yourself a favor and check these out!
